Eric Church didn't write "We Were" intending for it to wind up in his friend Keith Urban's hands. And Keith didn't know Eric had a hand in writing the song when he decided to record it.
But the two eventually connected the dots, and while Keith originally recorded the song by himself, he decided to put a new spin on it by inviting the writer to sing along with him. And now we have this piece of art!
