Biochemist Wins Pageant After Performing Science Experiment as Her "Talent"

Talk about an experiment! Camille Schrier's big risk paid off at the Miss Virginia pageant last week when the 24-year-old biochemist performed a science experiment for the talent portion of the competition--and won the whole thing. In a lab coat, dangly diamond earrings and heels, Schrier demonstrated the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide--known as the "elephant toothpaste reaction" due to the streams of foam the experiment creates. "As someone who is breaking the boundaries and breaking stereotypes for what talent looks like at Miss America, I wanted to be a little out of the box, and it really worked out," Schrier told the Richmond Times-Dispatch. After graduating cum laude from Virginia Tech in 2018 with degrees in biochemistry and systems biology, Schrier is now pursuing a doctor of pharmacy degree at Virginia Commonwealth University.
