I knew Sandra Bullock's children had been adopted but I didn't know the full story until I saw her interview with Hoda Kotb on the Today Show this morning. Sandra opened up about how Hurricane Katrina spurred her first adoption and how her son inspired her next adoption.
This interview really touched me. Most importantly, there are many children in need of loving families, but something else she said struck a chord with me - "there is no box."
There is no blueprint you have to stick to when it comes to starting or growing or family. Sandra was in her 40s and wasn't sure she was ever going to be a mom. Tragedy struck, spoke to her, and brought her to her son Louis. And then Louis brought her to her daughter.
I'm 32 and I've felt pressure over the years of having a traditional family unit. But life and my career has kept me busy. And I want to make sure I am able to give a child the support it truly deserves before I decide to start a family.
Family can come by your own time and means, and as Sandra said, you'll know when it's right.
